SOUTH AFRICA

As the provincial capital of the Free State, and South Africa’s judicial capital, tourism in Bloem (as the locals call it) is generally business oriented. But it’s also a university town, so when school’s in session, nightlife is raging. There’s no real reason to go out of your way to visit Bloem, although it has a few interesting sights if you are in the neighbourhood.
Commemorating the 26, 000 women and children who died in British concentration camps during the 1899–1902 Anglo-Boer War, the National Women’s Memorial depicts a bearded Afrikaner, setting off on his pony to fight the British, bidding a last farewell to his wife and baby, who are to perish in one of the camps. It’s a powerful image and one still buried in the psyche of many Afrikaners.

Good-looking, fun-loving, sporty and sociable. If Cape Town was in the dating game that's how her profile would read. And - for once - it's all true. The Mother City of South Africa occupies one of the world's most stunning locations, with an iconic mountain slap-bang in her centre.

Stretching along a swathe of butter-yellow sand, South Africa’s third-largest city offers a lively, if slightly tacky, prepackaged seaside holiday. The beachfront, with its multi-km stretch of high-rise hotels and snack bars, remains a city trademark, and the city centre, peppered with some grandiose colonial buildings and fascinating Art Deco architecture, throbs to a distinctly African beat. Home to the largest concentration of people of Indian descent in the country, Durban also boasts the sights, sounds and scents of the subcontinent. While the beachfront is still a favourite spot, many visitors, wary of the city’s increasing reputation for crime, base themselves in the suburbs, which are chock-a-block with accommodation, shopping malls, funky bars and stylish eateries.

INDIA

Tripura’s low-key capital is centred on the imposing Ujjayanta Palace. The town feels refreshingly organised and manageable if you’re arriving from Bangladesh, whose border is just 3km east of the centre.

Looking at the scuffy village today, it’s difficult to believe that Badami was once the capital of the Chalukya empire, which covered much of the central Deccan between the 4th and 8th centuries AD. However, climb up into the red sandstone ridge and explore the magnificent rock-cut cave temples surrounding the village, and you’ll find ample evidence of Badami’s former status.
Nearby Aihole hosted the earliest Chalukya capital; later the site was moved to Badami, with a secondary capital in Pattadakal. The result of this relocation is that the whole area around Badami is liberally scattered with ancient temples. Badami is the best base for taking in all these sites; a day or two should cover it.

No matter how determined you are, you'd be pretty hard pressed to find much to gush about when it comes to Chennai. The streets are clogged with traffic, the weather oppressively hot, the air heavy with smog, and sights of any interest are uncooperatively thin on the ground. Even the movie stars, as one Chennaiite put it, are 'not that hot'.While it may not boast the money of Mumbai (Bombay) or the buzz of Bengaluru (Bangalore), Chennai does feel friendlier than most cities its size. Chennai is so modest you wouldn't even know it’s an economic powerhouse, much less a queen of showbiz: India's fourth-largest city is its most humble.

The major transport hub of the region, this 70-sq-km city is a conglomerate of urban villages connected by a maze of roads ruled by hard-line rickshaw drivers. Its central location and excellent plane, train and bus connections actually make it an interesting alternative entry point into India. If you do happen to be caught here between connections, it's certainly worth your while poking around the markets of George Town or taking a sunset stroll along pretty Marina Beach.

atol de elote
•Yellow corn on the cob -- 6 to 7 ears
•Water -- 4 cups

•Sugar -- 1/3 cup, or to taste

•Salt -- 1/2 teaspoon

•Cornstarch (optional) -- 3 to 4 teaspoons

•Ground cinnamon -- for garnishing

Method

1.Using a sharp knife, carefully cut enough kernels off the corn cobs to make 3 to 3 1/2 cups. Then scrape the cobs with a knife to remove all their milk. Place 2 1/2 cups of the corn in a blender along with 2 cups of the water and puree well.

2.Strain the pureed corn through a sieve into a medium saucepan and discard the solids. Stir in the remaining corn kernels, 1/3 cup sugar and salt.

3.Bring the liquid to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, or until lightly thickened. If the atol doesn't thicken to a creamy consistency, mix the cornstarch with a little cold water and whisk into the simmering liquid until it is just thick enough to coat a spoon.

4.Pour the hot atol into mugs or small bowls, sprinkle with a little cinnamon and serve hot with a spoon to scoop up the corn kernels.

Variations

•Frozen corn can be used in a pinch, but the flavor won't be nearly as good.

Notes

•Because the corn used in Central America is starchier, you may have to add the suggested cornstarch to achieve the lightly thickened consistency.

Daisy Kilifi is 37 and married with five children. She owns a business venture, selling lavalavas (bottom-half wrap-around prints worn by both men and women). Daisy has 3 years of experience in this business. Daisy needs a loan of WST 2500 to purchase additional fabrics & materials. She plans to use the earnings from her business (estimated to be 350 talas or US $146 per week) to pay her children's tuition fees.

In 2007, Daisy joined SPBD. This is her 4th loan with SPBD. SPBD's loans are Daisy's only access to capital because she was never able to qualify for a loan with traditional banks.
In 2000, Greg Casagrande founded SPBD and since then, it has expanded from the main island of Upolu in Samoa to Savaii, as well as Tonga. SPBD's philosophy of lending is based upon the Grameen Bank lending method. Please join SPBD's lending team on KIVA to receive on-the-spot updates on SPBD.

_she is a hard working person under stress with kids and is not too young. she seems to want to own a business and is determined to do so. she was luckily able to qualify for SPBD and from there will pursue to go to making her business.

Maria sells meals from a food stall she operates under the name 'Comedor Emmanuel'. The business has been a great blessing and enabled her to raise and educate her children. Maria became a widow at an early age, making her situation worse. But in spite of everything, Maria has struggled to get ahead. Today, she gives thanks to God.

Maria, or “Doña Nena” as she is known locally, says she was the first to establish a kitchen stall in the zone and that at present, her costs are only 75 centavos (in Lempiras) per plate. Efficiency and good administration have permitted her to get ahead. Maria has been able to buy a house and make home improvements. One of her dreams is to construct an inn and thus, offer better service to people who come to visit the municipality.

_maria is her own boss and is selling food. by making her own business she is need of money as soon as possible. her prices are cheap enough to be able to start off but not enough. with that food business, she wants to pursue a service in an inn.

Maria del Carmen is a merchant who has a general store, operating under the name 'Pulpería MARYCARMEN'. It is located in her house in Las Flores (The Flowers) barrio, in the city of El Paraíso (The Paradise). She has more than 6 years of experience in running her business.
Maria administers it personally and during all this time, things have gone well. She comments that the business pays for the family's expenses and obligations. At the same time, Maria has a farm with 3 ½ acres of coffee that can be harvested, giving her an added source of income.
The loan will be used to better supply the business, increasing sales and improving the conditions of life for Maria and her family.

_she has experience in running her own business as far as running her own general store. although her family owns many properties, that's not her things. by having money she will be able to move forward to helping her family.
